Eczema-Friendly Eating at Buffets, Resorts and Cruises
Practical tips to help prevent eczema flare-ups when travelling or eating out
Travelling with eczema (or dermatitis) can feel overwhelming. At buffets, resorts, cruises, work conferences or family gatherings, you don’t always control what’s on the menu — and that can make managing your skin feel stressful. Hidden ingredients, histamine-rich foods, and unfamiliar cooking methods can all trigger symptoms.
But the good news? You don’t need to avoid holidays or social events to protect your skin. With a little awareness and some simple strategies, you can enjoy your trip while keeping eczema flare-ups to a minimum.
Common food challenges for eczema when travelling:
- Hidden triggers – soups thickened with flour or cream, fish brushed with butter, or even mashed potatoes made with eggs.
- Cooking methods – reused oils, heavy sauces and seasoning can be harsh on sensitive skin.
- High-histamine foods – cured meats, smoked fish, shellfish, and foods that have been sitting out too long at buffets.
- Overindulgence – large portions of rich, unfamiliar food can strain digestion and, in turn, affect skin health.

Travel-friendly eczema strategies:
- Build a safe base – start meals with simple proteins (like grilled chicken or plain fish), fresh vegetables, and healthy fats such as olive oil or seeds.
- Choose freshness – food cooked to order or just replenished from the kitchen is usually lower in histamine than food that’s been sitting out.
- Balance caution with enjoyment – fill most of your plate with eczema-safe foods, then add one or two items you’d like to try.
- Plan gentle resets – if a flare does happen, return to your safe-base meals, hydrate well, and focus on calming, anti-inflammatory foods for 24–48 hours.
Remember: eczema-friendly eating is about balance, not perfection. Stressing too much about food can be more triggering than the occasional slip. Holidays are short; what matters most is how you eat most of the time.

WHO AM I?
I’m Jessica Fonteneau, the Eczema and Digestive Health Nutrition Expert. I’ve worked with hundreds of clients to help them change their diets, better manage their flares, and find relief.
My vocation is to help those with eczema and digestive issues, because I have suffered with these interlinked conditions since I was 6 months old, and I truly know what it is like to experience these debilitating conditions.
Every client I have ever worked with has their own triggers and ideal nutrition. There is no such thing as ‘one-size-fits-all’. Whether you work with me one-to-one or use my guided tools, my objective is to help you uncover what works best for you, so that you take back control and experience relief.
My guided programmes are only suitable for adults as children have very specific nutrition requirements. I do, however, work with many child clients as part of my clinic.
