Eczema Flare Triggers: How Your Skin Sends SOS Signals

Understanding the deeper messages behind your eczema flares

If you live with eczema, you know how unpredictable it can feel. One moment, your skin is calm and the next, it’s red, hot, itchy, or even cracked and weeping. It’s easy to see these flares as just skin problems, but what if they were messages from inside your body? What if your skin was sending you SOS signals, trying to get your attention?

Your skin is more than a protective barrier. It’s a mirror of what’s happening inside your body. When eczema flares up, it’s often a sign that something isn’t quite right, whether that’s in your gut, liver, immune system, or even your stress response. In this article, I’m going to take a closer look at what your skin might be trying to tell you.

The Gut: Your Inner Skin

Your gut and skin are closely connected. Think of your gut as a second layer of skin, one that’s tucked away inside your body. When your gut is healthy, it helps keep your skin healthy too. But when the gut lining becomes irritated or inflamed, it can let unwanted particles like undigested food, toxins, and bacteria slip through. This can set off an immune response that shows up as skin inflammation.

People with eczema often notice digestive issues like bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea. That’s because when the gut is struggling, the skin often does too. Foods like gluten, dairy, and sugar can add to the problem, making it harder for the gut to keep calm. When the gut is inflamed, skin flares can follow. Supporting gut health is still important even for those that don’t have any obvious digestive issues. Having a multiple food sensitives or intolerances can be a symptom of a gut in poor health.

I’ll be exploring the gut-skin connection more in my next article, focusing on the skin microbiome — a fascinating area of research. Keep an eye out for that.

The Liver: Your Detox Powerhouse

Your liver is your body’s main detox centre. It processes toxins, hormones, and waste products, breaking them down and getting them ready for elimination. But when the liver is overloaded, whether from medications, alcohol, processed foods, or even stress, it can struggle to keep up. That’s when the liver can become backlogged and its detox pathways clogged, leading to a build-up of waste that the body tries to get rid of through the skin.   This might explain why some people find that their eczema flares after a weekend of takeaways, sugary drinks, or alcohol. The skin becomes a backup detox organ when the liver is overworked.

Eczema flare triggers: the liver

The Immune System: On High Alert

Eczema isn’t just about the skin; it’s about the immune system too. Eczema happens when the immune system overreacts to triggers like allergens, food sensitivities, or even stress. This overreaction leads to inflammation that can show up as itchy, red, and sore skin.

If your immune system is on high alert, even small irritants can set off big reactions. Seasonal allergies, infections, and hormonal changes can all play a part in ramping up inflammation and worsening eczema flares.

The Stress Response: When Cortisol Takes Over

Stress is a huge factor in eczema. When you’re stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone designed to help you cope. But when stress is constant, cortisol levels stay high for too long, weakening the skin barrier and increasing inflammation.

Sarah, a full-time carer for her elderly mother, found that her eczema flared every time she felt overwhelmed. During stressful weeks, her skin became more reactive and harder to manage. This is a common story — stress doesn’t just affect your mind; it shows up in your skin too.

Psoriasis: More Than Skin Deep

Psoriasis isn’t just about dry, flaky patches of skin. It’s a sign that the body’s immune system is in overdrive, causing skin cells to grow too quickly. This rapid turnover leads to thick, scaly patches that can feel sore and itchy.

Research suggests that gut imbalances, chronic infections, and liver congestion can all contribute to psoriasis. Stress and alcohol can also play a role, making flares worse. For people with psoriasis, looking beyond the skin to what’s happening inside the body can provide important clues for calming symptoms.

Eczema flare triggers: acne

Acne: A Sign of Hormonal Imbalance

Acne isn’t just about oily skin and clogged pores. It often signals a deeper hormonal imbalance. Hormones like testosterone can increase oil production, leading to breakouts. But it’s not just about hormones, gut health and liver function matter too.

When the gut is off balance, it can release inflammatory compounds that circulate in the bloodstream, potentially worsening acne. When the liver can’t keep up with processing hormones, those excess hormones can end up affecting the skin, leading to more breakouts.

Decoding Your Skin’s SOS Signals

When skin flares up, it’s easy to feel frustrated. But instead of seeing it as a setback, try to see it as a message. Your skin might be saying:

  • “I’m struggling with certain foods.”
  • “I’m feeling overwhelmed or stressed.”
  • “I’m dealing with too many toxins.”
  • “My immune system is overreacting.”

These signals are not random, they’re your body’s way of asking for help. Instead of just calming the surface, consider what might be happening inside that’s contributing to the flare.

The Path Forward: From SOS to Calm

If your skin is sending you SOS signals, start by paying attention to what might be triggering them. Are there specific foods that always seem to cause flares? Are stress levels higher than usual? Is the body struggling to detox effectively?

The Calm Your Eczema Trap™ programme is launching soon and will explore these connections in more depth. If you’re ready to understand what your skin is really trying to tell you and how to calm those flares, you won’t want to miss it. Click here to join the Early Bird Information and Price List.

WHO AM I?

I’m Jessica Fonteneau, the Eczema and Digestive Health Nutrition Expert. I’ve worked with hundreds of clients to help them change their diets, better manage their flares, and find relief.

My vocation is to help those with eczema and digestive issues, because I have suffered with these interlinked conditions since I was 6 months old, and I truly know what it is like to experience these debilitating conditions.

Every client I have ever worked with has their own triggers and ideal nutrition. There is no such thing as ‘one-size-fits-all’. Whether you work with me one-to-one or use my guided tools, my objective is to help you uncover what works best for you, so that you take back control and experience relief.

My guided programmes are only suitable for adults as children have very specific nutrition requirements. I do, however, work with many child clients as part of my clinic.

We have been working with Jessica for a while now for my son’s eczema and many food intolerances. We have come a long way with him tolerating a lot more foods whilst previously being on such a limited diet. We have seen a huge difference in his skin too. One thing we love about working with her is that she is highly knowledgeable about how the gut works, what food works well and how to carefully introduce food to increase tolerance. We would honestly be so lost without her support. She provides timely responses if we have any concerns and always has such an empathetic approach if we have a little bump in our journey.

I would recommend Jessica to any parents struggling with their childs eczema or any individuals out there trying to figure out eczema, want to naturally heal through foods and identifying triggers to get relief in your flares.

I have no hesitation in highly recommending Jessica. She really knows her stuff! I first consulted her six months ago with lack of appetite, lack of energy and depression, not unrelated to having recently become a widow. Right from the start I was very impressed at the way Jessica really listened to me during her consultations, writing very thorough and detailed reports afterwards with her holistic recommendations . Six months later I am eating better, have more energy and even able to go dancing regularly (which is not bad for a 74 year old!) Thank you Jessica

Jessica has helped save my sanity when I was suffering from unexplained symptoms. She very quickly identified that this could be the side effects of an overdose of supplements and once I discontinued these, I felt better quickly. I continued working with Jessica on other food and lifestyle questions and always found her extremely helpful, patient and knowledgable. I would recommend her to friends and family.

Jessica was a fantastic support when my 1 year old developed severe eczema. We worked together to identify the root cause of her symptoms and Jessica advised an easy to follow, realistic and successful protocol for us to follow to help her manage this. My daughter’s skin significantly calmed down within weeks and although it’s been a long journey her eczema has now disappeared. Jessica has extensive knowledge on eczema and created a personal plan for us to follow. She was always available and willing to help and reassure where needed. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for support with nutrition or skin issues. Thank you so much!

After struggling with severe eczema nearly all my life and trying countless steroid creams/emollients prescribed by dermatology consultants I have finally been able to take back control of my skin through Jessica's trigger identifying diet. The skills and tool kit she has provided me with have been life changing and I'm confident I have everything I need to continue my journey without the help of a professional. Jessica has helped me to feel empowered through understanding my body and I am very grateful.
Jessica has helped me and my son so much with some persistent eczema on his face. She put together a highly comprehensive plan and considered all aspects of his diet, routine and lifestyle. She has checked in several times since our appointment and I felt she really cared about his health and well-being. Highly recommend to any parents whose child is suffering from an allergy or skin disorder!
