Eczema and Hot Weather: Foods to have when the weather gets hot and the eczema gets itchy
How nutrition can calm hot, itchy skin – from infancy through adulthood
If you or your child have eczema, you might find that summer brings more than just sunshine. For many of the people I work with, hot weather seems to dial up the itch, increase inflammation, and make the skin feel as though it’s burning from the inside out.
This isn’t your imagination – and it’s not just about being too warm. Heat can worsen eczema symptoms by increasing sweating, raising histamine levels, and putting more pressure on an already-vulnerable skin barrier. Add in changes to diet – like more processed foods, cold drinks, or ice cream – and it’s not surprising that many people see a flare when the temperature rises.

The good news? Food can be part of the solution.
In my latest article, I take a look at cooling, anti-inflammatory foods that can help soothe eczema from the inside out – whether you’re supporting a weaning baby, an itchy toddler, a teenager in the middle of hay fever season, or struggling with your own adult eczema flares.
I also cover:
- Why heat seems to make eczema worse (and what’s really going on)
- Which foods are best to include during the summer months – and which are worth reducing
- How gut health and hydration play a key role in how your skin responds
- A simple one-day cooling meal plan for school-aged children
You don’t need to overhaul your entire diet – small changes really can make a difference. If your skin (or your child’s) tends to flare when the weather gets hot, this article is for you.
WHO AM I?
I’m Jessica Fonteneau, the Eczema and Digestive Health Nutrition Expert. I’ve worked with hundreds of clients to help them change their diets, better manage their flares, and find relief.
My vocation is to help those with eczema and digestive issues, because I have suffered with these interlinked conditions since I was 6 months old, and I truly know what it is like to experience these debilitating conditions.
Every client I have ever worked with has their own triggers and ideal nutrition. There is no such thing as ‘one-size-fits-all’. Whether you work with me one-to-one or use my guided tools, my objective is to help you uncover what works best for you, so that you take back control and experience relief.
My guided programmes are only suitable for adults as children have very specific nutrition requirements. I do, however, work with many child clients as part of my clinic.
