Why Winter Creates a Tough Season for Eczema
Winter quickly becomes the hardest season for children with eczema because cold air pulls moisture from the skin immediately. Children with eczema already lose water at a faster rate due to a naturally fragile skin barrier². When the weather turns colder, this vulnerability becomes far more obvious. Higher transepidermal water loss, known as TEWL, often matches more uncomfortable skin and more severe flare ups². As temperatures fall and humidity drops, TEWL rises, the skin dries out and flare ups arrive sooner than expected.
How Cold Air Strains the Skin Barrier
Cold air holds very little moisture and drags water out of the skin’s top layers with ease. The skin barrier acts like a protective wall made from ‘bricks and mortar’. Skin cells form the bricks. Natural skin oils, especially ceramides, form the mortar that holds everything together. Filaggrin, a key skin protein, helps form these skin cells properly and breaks down into natural moisturising factors that attract and hold water. When a child carries reduced filaggrin or a tendency to produce fewer ceramides, the ‘mortar’ already starts thin and crumbly. As a result, water escapes more easily and irritants enter more quickly. Cold air widens these gaps further, and the already fragile structure struggles to keep moisture inside.

Why Indoor Heating Intensifies Dryness
Indoor heating dries the air dramatically and places even greater pressure on eczema prone skin. Humidity in winter homes often drops so low that the skin loses water faster than it can replace it. Heated rooms weaken the skin’s natural lipid balance and slow its ability to repair¹. Children move repeatedly between freezing outdoor conditions and dry indoor heat. Every shift forces the skin to adjust again, and the barrier never settles. Dry indoor air strips the skin’s natural oils, raises TEWL and leaves the skin more vulnerable to friction, itching and cracked patches.
Why Eczema Skin Becomes ‘Leaky’ in Winter
A healthy barrier holds moisture firmly inside the skin and blocks irritants from entering. Children with eczema experience the opposite. Weak filaggrin levels reduce the skin’s supply of natural moisturising factors. Low ceramide levels weaken the lipid mortar. Because this structure starts compromised, winter stress widens every gap. Water escapes quickly, TEWL rises and irritants slip in easily. Higher TEWL readings often match more severe eczema and a greater breakdown in the barrier³. Winter does not create this leakiness, but it magnifies it dramatically.
How Temperature Changes Trigger Itching
Children switch between cold pavements and warm classrooms all day. Thick winter clothing makes the skin heat up fast, sweat forms quickly and irritation builds. Sweat on sensitive skin intensifies itching, especially when layers trap moisture against the surface. Synthetic fabrics and padded coats add friction, and friction creates microscopic damage in an already fragile barrier. Each temperature change pushes nerve endings to react strongly, and itching spirals rapidly.
Why Winter Disrupts the Skin Microbiome
The skin hosts a community of microbes that usually help keep irritation under control. Winter environmental shifts make this balance difficult to maintain. Dry skin cracks easily and creates opportunities for microbes such as Staphylococcus aureus to settle. Staph often grows more readily on eczema prone skin and rises during winter, when dryness gives it even more space to expand. As Staph takes a stronger hold, inflammation increases and healing slows. The microbiome struggles to stay balanced when the barrier weakens, and winter conditions tilt the balance further out of place.
Where Flare Ups Appear First
Cheeks, hands and skin folds flare first because they experience the strongest exposure. Facial skin loses moisture quickly, especially in wind and cold air. Hands face washing, outdoor surfaces and constant temperature changes. Elbows and knees trap heat and sweat beneath clothing. These areas already hold structural weaknesses that winter magnifies. Moisturisers soothe these patches, but dryness returns quickly because cold air and dry heating continue to pull moisture away.

Why Filaggrin and Ceramides Matter More in Winter
Filaggrin acts like the scaffolding that helps skin cells form tightly packed layers. When filaggrin levels run low, the bricks become smaller, less structured and less able to hold natural moisture. Ceramides, meanwhile, strengthen the mortar between the cells. When ceramides run low, the mortar crumbles and water escapes. Children with eczema often experience both issues together². Because winter removes moisture from the surface and weakens lipids further¹, the skin loses both its scaffold and its glue. TEWL rises because both the internal structure and outer defences cannot cope with the environmental pressure.
Why Understanding Water Loss Helps Parents Stay Calm
Every winter flare connects back to the same core issue: the skin loses water faster than it can replace it. TEWL provides a window into how well the barrier holds on to moisture. Children with eczema often show higher TEWL even in skin that looks clear². This means the entire skin needs support, not only the patches that look inflamed. Winter simply exposes that hidden vulnerability more strongly. Once parents recognise this, the constant flare ups feel less mysterious and the whole pattern makes more sense.
Why This Perspective Helps Parents Feel More in Control
Parents often feel overwhelmed trying to locate every possible trigger. Winter eczema rarely comes down to one cause. Instead it reflects the barrier’s overall strength. A stronger barrier copes better with cold air, dry heating, clothing friction and rapid temperature changes. Moisturisers soothe the surface, yet the deeper repair work depends on nutrients that rebuild ceramides, filaggrin and structural lipids. Once parents understand this, the approach shifts from avoiding everything to strengthening the skin, which feels far more achievable.
How Nutrition Strengthens a Winter Stressed Barrier
Nutrition gives the skin the building blocks it needs to rebuild. Omega 3 fats support calmer, more resilient skin. Protein provides the amino acids required to produce filaggrin and structural skin proteins. Seeds, nuts, oily fish and good quality plant oils supply the materials used to create ceramides. Colourful plant foods provide polyphenols that support microbial balance and reduce irritation. Winter often brings lower sunlight exposure, more time indoors and changes to diet, so nutritional support becomes essential when the environment pulls moisture from the skin all day.
Why Your Home Environment Still Matters
Indoor environments influence TEWL strongly. Heated rooms often reach humidity levels that challenge the skin’s ability to stay moisturised. Warmer indoor skin loses water more quickly. Small changes, such as slightly increasing indoor humidity, reduce the stress on the barrier and help the skin stay calmer. Families often notice rapid improvement when the air carries a little more moisture.
How This Knowledge Reduces Winter Worry
Winter does not cause eczema, but it intensifies every weak point in the skin’s structure. Cold air pulls moisture out. Indoor heating removes humidity. Thick clothing traps sweat. The microbiome shifts. Filaggrin and ceramide shortages become more noticeable. TEWL climbs and irritation appears quickly. Understanding these mechanisms helps parents feel calmer and more confident. Winter brings predictable challenges, yet children cope far better when the barrier receives the structural and nutritional support it needs.

I’m Jessica Fonteneau, the Eczema and Digestive Health Nutrition Expert. I’ve worked with hundreds of clients to help them change their diets, better manage their flares, and find relief.
