Why Your Eczema Keeps Returning, & How to Break the Cycle

Oct 27, 2025 | Dermatitis, Eczema, Skin Health

If you’ve ever thought your eczema had finally gone, only for it to return weeks or months later, you’re not alone. You can control how quickly you calm a flare, how confidently you identify triggers, how resilient your skin becomes between episodes, and how long your remissions last, but it’s still wise to prepare for the possibility of another flare.

For most people, managing eczema feels like detective work. One week your skin feels calm, then suddenly you are itchy, sore, and retracing your steps, trying to work out what you ate, used, or did differently. Eczema is not random. Your gut, immune system, stress levels, environment, and even how your body clears waste all play a role in eczema. Because these systems interact, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

That challenge led me to create the Escape the Eczema Trap® framework. After years of working with adults living with eczema, I began to see the same patterns, not only in symptoms but also in frustration. Many of my clients followed every recommendation they were given, eliminated foods, switched detergents, and even changed their diets completely. Some improved, others did not, and most found themselves caught in the same exhausting loop of flare and recovery.

What they needed wasn’t another “eczema diet”, but a roadmap that explained why their flares happened and how to respond calmly and effectively.

Making peace with eczema

I hate to say this, but one of the first steps in managing eczema is making peace with the fact that you have dermatitis.

People often come to see me with the goal of clearing their eczema, which is fine, but they also quietly hope it will never return.

If you’re an adult who has had chronic eczema for some time, it’s unlikely that it will disappear for good.

Case in point, I’ve had eczema since I was six months old. These days, I manage my flares and can go whole years without one, but I always know that it could return at any time, despite everything I know and practise.

Eczema is complex, but not mysterious

If you’ve been reading my Substack, you’ll know that I got royally egged this summer, and it took time and patience for me to bring my skin back under control.

Even when your skin looks normal, your immune system and barrier sensitivities still react beneath the surface. Stress, weather, hormones, or even small diet changes can all trigger a flare.

It doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Understanding your own “eczema trap”, the specific combination of factors that keeps your inflammation loop active, is the first step to lasting calm.

The 10 Recurring Themes that Underpin Most Dermatitis Flares

I’ve worked with thousands of clients and found that ten recurring themes appear repeatedly. Rarely in the same order or combination, but the same ten threads running through each person’s story.

I’ve always thought of being stuck in a chronic flare cycle as being trapped, and that’s how the idea of the Eczema Trap® came about. In my mind, those ten recurring themes form the strands of the net that keep you stuck inside it.

Which Strands Make Up Your Eczema Trap®

Which strands make up your personal Eczema Trap® is entirely individual. The good news is that each can be supported through everyday choices. Food, lifestyle, and stress management all have measurable effects on inflammation, microbiome balance, and barrier repair. What matters most is learning which supports you need at any given time.

Over the past year, I’ve taken the Escape the Eczema Trap® framework a step further and built it into ten focused 21-day programmes, or strands. Each strand tackles one piece of the eczema puzzle, giving you tools, handouts, and recipes you can reuse for life.

You can’t guarantee that you’ll never flare again, but you can have the knowledge and strategies to move through a flare faster and with much less disruption.

The first three strands are now live

I recently held a series of three live events explaining the ten strands in more detail. Feel free to have a watch, though fair warning, technology failed me, so while I could see the slides in full screen, the recordings show them in presenter view. The content is all there though.

👉 Watch here

These are the strands that come up most frequently in my one-to-one practice, and, for most people, they are the best place to start:

  • Elimination Reset – helps you gently uncover food related triggers while nourishing your body, not depriving it. You’ll learn how to create calm through strategic food choices, so you can stop guessing what’s causing your flares.
  • Gut Repair – supports the microbiome and strengthens the gut barrier, helping to reduce inflammation that shows up on your skin.
  • Reintroduction and Clarity – guides you through reintroducing foods safely and methodically, helping you separate true triggers from harmless foods that were once unfairly blamed.

Anyone who has followed me will know how much importance I place on reintroduction, it is vital for ongoing health and recovery.

Together, these three strands form a powerful cycle: remove, repair, reintroduce. They are designed to help you restore balance and confidence before tackling the deeper layers.

The bigger picture, ten strands for lifelong calm

Once you’ve built that foundation, you can explore the remaining strands, which will be released soon. Each build on your understanding of how your body and skin communicate.

The full Escape the Eczema Trap® strand series includes:

  1. Elimination
  2. Gut Restore
  3. Reintroduction
  4. Inflammation
  5. Nutrient Replenish
  6. Environmental and Skin Barrier Support
  7. Liver Support
  8. Stress
  9. Histamine and MCAS
  10. Hormones

Each strand includes structured lessons, downloadable handouts, and extensive recipe booklets that you can reuse any time a flare appears. My goal was to make them genuinely useful, not just for three weeks, but for years to come.

Why I’ve developed my programmes this way

In clinic, I often meet people who have spent years cycling between elimination diets, steroid creams, and supplements that never quite deliver lasting change. They know food and lifestyle matter, but they don’t know where to start or how to test what’s truly relevant for their skin.

These strands were designed to take the overwhelm out of that process. Each one gives you a clear focus, achievable goals, and education you can build upon.

You can do one strand, several, or all ten, depending on where you are in your eczema journey. Some people start with Elimination; others begin with Gut Repair or Stress. The important thing is that every strand connects back to the same framework, understanding your personal Eczema Trap® and learning to navigate it with confidence.

You can even take a short quiz on my website to discover which strands are most likely contributing to your trap:

Start to manage rather than fear

The most common question I hear is, “What if it comes back?”
It’s completely understandable. Flares can feel unpredictable and demoralising, but they don’t have to mean failure.

When you understand what’s really going on behind your skin, a flare becomes feedback, not confusion.

The Escape the Eczema Trap® strands are designed to teach you exactly that. Learn how to read your body’s signals, calm inflammation early, and know what to do when symptoms start. Know when to simplify, when to add back variety, and how to maintain balance even when life gets busy.

That’s true eczema freedom, not perfect skin forever, but calm confidence in knowing how to support yourself when your skin needs extra care.

A note on food and lifestyle

These strands aren’t about restriction or quick fixes. Each includes a wide variety of foods to support gut, liver, and immune health, with recipes that are practical and enjoyable.

You’ll find meal inspiration that helps you nourish your skin from within, reduce inflammation naturally, and still eat in a way that feels sustainable.

If you’ve followed me here or on social media, you’ll know my focus is always on discovering what your body thrives on, not endless exclusion. That’s why the Reintroduction strand is one of the first to go live, because balance is key.

A new way to think about yourself

Eczema doesn’t go away, but that doesn’t mean you are trapped by it. With the right understanding and tools, you can live with calm, resilient skin and the confidence to manage flares when they appear.

These programmes aren’t about perfection; they are about empowerment. The more you understand your skin’s language, the more control you regain over your health and your life.

In a nutshell

  • Eczema is a lifelong condition, but flares can be managed with knowledge and the right tools.
  • The Escape the Eczema Trap® strands teach you how to identify triggers, repair your gut, and reintroduce foods safely.
  • The first three strands, Elimination Reset, Gut Repair, and Reintroduction and Clarity, are available now.
  • Each 21-day programme includes supportive modules, reusable handouts, and extensive recipe booklets.
  • The remaining strands will be released soon, covering inflammation, histamine, stress, nutrients, and more.
  • Your skin’s calm isn’t luck, it’s learning.

WHO AM I?

I’m Jessica Fonteneau, the Eczema and Digestive Health Nutrition Expert. I’ve worked with hundreds of clients to help them change their diets, better manage their flares, and find relief.

My vocation is to help those with eczema and digestive issues, because I have suffered with these interlinked conditions since I was 6 months old, and I truly know what it is like to experience these debilitating conditions.

Every client I have ever worked with has their own triggers and ideal nutrition. There is no such thing as ‘one-size-fits-all’. Whether you work with me one-to-one or use my guided tools, my objective is to help you uncover what works best for you, so that you take back control and experience relief.

My guided programmes are only suitable for adults as children have very specific nutrition requirements. I do, however, work with many child clients as part of my clinic.

To easily keep up with my articles, masterclasses, ebooks and online programmes and receive exclusive access to early bird offers, subscribe to my Substack, The Eczema Trap® here.

We have been working with Jessica for a while now for my son’s eczema and many food intolerances. We have come a long way with him tolerating a lot more foods whilst previously being on such a limited diet. We have seen a huge difference in his skin too. One thing we love about working with her is that she is highly knowledgeable about how the gut works, what food works well and how to carefully introduce food to increase tolerance. We would honestly be so lost without her support. She provides timely responses if we have any concerns and always has such an empathetic approach if we have a little bump in our journey.

I would recommend Jessica to any parents struggling with their childs eczema or any individuals out there trying to figure out eczema, want to naturally heal through foods and identifying triggers to get relief in your flares.

I have no hesitation in highly recommending Jessica. She really knows her stuff! I first consulted her six months ago with lack of appetite, lack of energy and depression, not unrelated to having recently become a widow. Right from the start I was very impressed at the way Jessica really listened to me during her consultations, writing very thorough and detailed reports afterwards with her holistic recommendations . Six months later I am eating better, have more energy and even able to go dancing regularly (which is not bad for a 74 year old!) Thank you Jessica

Jessica has helped save my sanity when I was suffering from unexplained symptoms. She very quickly identified that this could be the side effects of an overdose of supplements and once I discontinued these, I felt better quickly. I continued working with Jessica on other food and lifestyle questions and always found her extremely helpful, patient and knowledgable. I would recommend her to friends and family.

Jessica was a fantastic support when my 1 year old developed severe eczema. We worked together to identify the root cause of her symptoms and Jessica advised an easy to follow, realistic and successful protocol for us to follow to help her manage this. My daughter’s skin significantly calmed down within weeks and although it’s been a long journey her eczema has now disappeared. Jessica has extensive knowledge on eczema and created a personal plan for us to follow. She was always available and willing to help and reassure where needed. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone looking for support with nutrition or skin issues. Thank you so much!

After struggling with severe eczema nearly all my life and trying countless steroid creams/emollients prescribed by dermatology consultants I have finally been able to take back control of my skin through Jessica's trigger identifying diet. The skills and tool kit she has provided me with have been life changing and I'm confident I have everything I need to continue my journey without the help of a professional. Jessica has helped me to feel empowered through understanding my body and I am very grateful.

Jessica has helped me and my son so much with some persistent eczema on his face. She put together a highly comprehensive plan and considered all aspects of his diet, routine and lifestyle. She has checked in several times since our appointment and I felt she really cared about his health and well-being. Highly recommend to any parents whose child is suffering from an allergy or skin disorder!
